Introduction

To enhance the visual experience of their journalism, the BBC embarked on a groundbreaking project, enlisting the skills of renowned cinematographer Robert Horwell. This project sought to create a more dynamic and immersive visual experience for viewers, and it took Robert on a global journey to capture BBC journalists in action.

One of the pivotal factors that contributed to the success of the  project was the exceptional working relationship between  Bob and director Paul. This partnership not only ignited a professional but also a deeply creative bond that was crucial to the project's overall success.

Open and transparent communication was a hallmark of their partnership. They exchanged ideas freely, sought feedback from each other, and were unafraid to challenge each other's creative boundaries. This open dialogue enabled them to refine their vision and ensure that the project's goals were met.

Robert Horwell embarked on an incredible journey across the globe, capturing BBC journalists in their natural working environments. His mission was to capture the essence of their work and personality. The locations for this project were carefully selected to encompass a wide range of journalistic experiences, and they included:

  1. Istanbul, Turkey: A city bridging Europe and Asia, Istanbul provided a unique backdrop for capturing journalists in the midst of breaking news in a cross-continental setting.

  2. New York, USA: The bustling streets of New York City served as an ideal setting for high-stakes interviews and on-the-ground reporting.

  3. Singapore: The vibrant and diverse city-state of Singapore presented opportunities to showcase the global reach of the BBC.

  4. London, United Kingdom: The home base for the BBC and its journalists, London served as a backdrop for showcasing the heart of the organization.
     

Cinematography as a Dynamic Tool

Robert Horwell utilized his expertise in cinematography to craft a visually engaging narrative. He employed a range of techniques, from dynamic camera movements to innovative lighting, all aimed at conveying the energy and urgency of journalism.
